The Adventure Begins!

Creek Bridge Cottage - Kelsch Family Cabin
Before I begin my great adventure, my parents and I decided to spend a couple of days at their cabin in Big Bear.  We spent most of the time checking out local restaurants, doing some repairs, and watching Saturday Night Live (Charles Barkley was hilarious last night!)

Tomorrow, I leave to begin my great adventure!  I am very excited about my travel itinerary - I've taken advantage of my layovers and the fact that I don't need to begin work in Kenya for a few weeks.

The first leg of my trip is in Frankfurt, where I will be spending a week with one of my college roommates from UCSB, Emily.  Emily is a fan of Law & Order, loves David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust period), and her work takes her all over Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.  Our plan is to have a culinary exploration of Frankfurt.

The second leg of the trip to is Switzerland.  I will be taking a beautiful train ride from Frankfurt to Zurich to spend a week with my Swiss-Exchange-Family, Familie Andres.  (I lived in Switzerland for a gap-year between high school and college.)  The Andres' love sports, living healthy, the environment, and learning.  We'll be spending time cross-country skiing, eating Kase und Schoggi (Swiss-German "cheese and chocolate"), and talking politics while watching the short-lived sun slip behind the snow-capped Alps from their living room windows.

The final leg of the journey will be to Nairobi.  I have 10 days to get from Nairobi to Kisumu.  I'm still not sure what I'll be doing, but have a couple of weeks to figure it out.  I'm hoping to find a safari, hiking trip, or some other means of exploring the country on a student-budget.  Any recommendations would be great!

For now, let's see how much I can stuff into my suitcase and get away with it!
